Clock Day 2010

Well, Clock Day 2010 is almost upon us - or, as most of us stat-whores call it, "Christmas in NewGrounds". We all have different feelings on Clock Day, and I figured I'd start this thread to let us kick around what we think and what we did on this esteemed anniversary celebration,

Also, I've done some tweaking to the data capture for the automated EGB roster, and it now collects our data on a DAILY basis. This will let us see our stat growth between any two days, starting with August 1, 2010. Check out the page:

http://wkrconcepts.com/egb/deltadays.php :D

I haven't linked it into any other pages yet - just wanted to see what everyone thought about it.

Anyways, time to get back to the portal - it's gonna get real busy real soon.

What's the Delta part mean? Also, could you make me a Clock Day sig please Byte? I chose "Probably let most of them pass, except the really abusive or broken flashes" that's what I tried to do last year.

Delta refers to the change of something. For example, the change of your B/P from one day to the next. If you have 30,000 one day, and 30,100 the next, the delta between those two days is 100.

By the way, let's remember that we are a club devoted to VOTING FAIRLY, NO MATTER WHAT. No massive 5'ing just for the friggin' points.

Oh of course. Though as we've seen, most everything has been pure tripe.

Re: Clock Day 2010

I assure you, oh fair and illustrious leader, that I am not "voting 5 on everything" - in fact, I am voting the same as I always do. I have tried to blam at least 30 or 40 of those flashes, but as of now only the ones I've passed have gotten me points. As of 11:00 AM EST, there have been over 200 Clock Day flashes submitted; I snagged about 90 saves and no blams (unless some get deleted later by Wade). ;)

And, yes, I'm pulling another all-nighter. But quite frankly, the portal isn't as busy as it was last year. Maybe it'll speed up later, but if it continues at this rate, I'm estimating less than 500 Clock Day flashes this year - well below the 800+ we had last August.

As for making you a Clock Day sig, Cobra - I would love to make you one, but I doubt I'd have it complete by the end of the day. Wish you had asked me about that a few days ago - that would have been no problem at all. Sorry about that.

Time to get back to the portal - see you on the other side!

Well I had completely forgotten about Clock Day coming up, though ironically it's all we've been talking about Byte. :( Are you sure you couldn't try and throw something together, pretty please?

Yeah, but "voting the same as you always do" would mean that you are voting like it's just any other day. So why vote that you will "probably let most of them pass?" Only one person voted that they would "vote fairly and not care about the points," which was me. That means everyone else is trying to get points, or is being more lenient just because it's Clock Day. That goes directly against what this club stands for.

The point I'm trying to make is that if you would not pass a Flash on any other day except this day, why would you protect it today?

Re: Clock Day 2010

To clarify my position here, let me start by saying we're not talking about obvious blammable flashes (porn, hentai, abusive, blank screen, etc) vs. obvious passable flashes. We're talking about the gray area in the middle where one person might see a flash as a "1" and others may see it as a "2".

If a flash is not obviously blammable, and it requires a person's own feeling of "right" versus "wrong", I generally pass it with a 2 if some sort of effort was put into it (original artwork, some animation, not derogatory, etc.) I like to give "honest" noobs the benefit of the doubt.

On Clock Day, we see the whole range of flash, from decent animation to downright abuse. I vote on them as I usually do - and it has been my observation that there are quite a bit in that "gray" area of "1" vs. "2". It has also been my observation that about a third of the flashes are outright tripe, and they have been blammed accordingly. Some have been decent, worthy of 3 or 4. But the rest fall in that grey area - and as I said before, I personally tend to be lenient in my voting in that case. It is the way I look at life, so in my case, based on the mix of flashes submitted and what I've observed today, it seems that "voting as usual" and "probably let most pass" work out to be the same thing.

I will, however, fully agree with you on your very important point you made: Clock Day is not an excuse to change your voting habits. We should all vote fair, as we always should do.

No disrespect has been intended, Eagle - I just wanted you to know that I do understand your directives and I am still following them as I usually do.

Thanks for that response. It certainly cleared things up. Let me clarify myself that the only thing I care about is that voting habits don't change on Clock Day. In the case of "gray area" flashes which are pretty much always up to interpretation, that's a different story. We all handle it in our own ways. Of course, depending on your voting habits, something I consider a "0" could be a "5", and vice-versa. I guess the poll options were misleading in that regard.

Also, I saw no form of disrespect whatsoever...I asked a question, and you answered. If you refused to answer, that might have been disrespect. :-)

Anyhoo, now that Clock Day has officially passed us (the sea of blue also stopped, lol), let's get some thoughts from the members. Here's mine:

This year's Clock Day was quite mundane in comparison to other years. For those that were around to see it, Clock Day '07 was the worst one I could remember. By 12:01 NST (Newgrounds Standard Time, lol), I saw at least 75 Flash UJ. It was necessary to use the "More Recent Submissions" page just to get a look at all of the UJ entries. Also, almost every single person instinctively voted 5 on each Flash, as every single Flash that came off the Portal was blue (and IIRC, all had scores over 4.5). Exciting? Sure. But, as you can imagine, a tad depressing.

That Clock Day saw something along the lines of 2,000 Flash submitted, and 0 blams. That was also the Clock Day that Slash performed a major 180 on his Flash policies. If you look back in the history of the EGB thread on that day, you'll see him get more and more irate during the day. By the 16th, he was Samuel L Jackson, and the mass 5-ers were snakes (lol). I'd say the worst part was the day after Clock Day, though.

On 8/16/07, the mass-5ing just didn't stop. I'd say it was until the 17th that Flash finally started to get blammed again and not every single Flash was green or blue. The real issue I had with the 16th was that people like Fleek started to take advantage of the mass-5ing and posted boatloads of crappy and malicious Flash using many alts that day. I remember that we would get a least 5-10 Flash a day from that group after the 16th.

Anyway, this Clock Day didn't see any of that. Most stuff got past, yes, but I didn't see a "sea of blue" like I did in previous years. Around 7PM NST it was getting to that point, but it curbed rather quickly afterwards. It think the NG Admins started to realize that Clock Day was doing more harm than good and that's why they didn't advertise it or overtly announce it. Instead, it wasn't until the afternoon or evening that most people remembered and started up the ol' tradition, but soon let it pass. We did, however, as in previous years, get some great CC submissions to look at, and i have a few fav's for it.

How about the rest of you. Impressions? Comparisons to other years? Let's hear it!

The worst part about it, though, was that the mass-5ing didn't stop

Re: Clock Day 2010

Its funny because 2007 was the first Clock Crew day I remember it was crazy and  :| mad wish I had been in EGB then. But this years was slower I voted fairly which I do anyway but it was slower I missed the crazy mass of flashes of last year.

Re: Clock Day 2010

I just saw a delayed gift from Clock Day today - over 100 of the flashes I blammed I got points for! Looks like the Fulps deleted the crap that should have been deleted all along. I am glad to see that vigilance and fair voting paid off. :D

Just wanted to share that with everyone here - and I see, based on the stat logger, that many other members have been rewarded as well. At least 10 other members saw 100+ blams for their efforts, and I estimate that for all of the EGB, we managed to scrape up a cumulative 1,500+ deferred blam points for Clock Day.

Thank you all for doing the right thing - our efforts have been rewarded in many ways.

A well-deserved gift at that. I managed about 50 B/P, so I didn't fare as well as others, but I still did pretty well, I think. I didn't vote all days, I'm happy with it. Either way, like I said in the thread, it really showed how the EGB was voting out there...and you all should be happy with how it turned out. Great work everyone!

Re: Clock Day 2010

It can't all be from Clock Day, I got over 130 blams and I'm sure as hell I didn't blam 130 flashes. Wade must have done a huge sweep.

I'm not complaining, I got a nice pile of big juicy blam points under my belt, and I know all the flagging and blamming of spam flashes actually led to something.
