Ehh.. Give me some real classic American muscle:

And for the record, the Dodge Charger does not count. Any muscle car that does not come in a manual transmission has no right calling itself a muscle car.

Take a look at an engine from 1968 and you'll see very little in the hood except pure power. Nowadays, there's just way too much to bother to try to figure out. :)

Well yeah, the engine is kind of unavoidable (although even that in a Toyota Aygo - which is what's pictured in my last post - is really basic). I was thinking more of needless electonics and gadgets. Put it this way:

My brother's car has electric windows and central locking. Mine has neither of these. Both the locking and the windows in my brother's car are broken, meaning he can't open his windows or get into more than one of his car doors.
Which car is better: A gizmo'd-to-the-eyeballs car that's broken, or an old-fashioned "lame" model that isn't?

FINALLY! I FOUND AN AMERICAN THAT APPRECIATES A MANUAL GEARBOX!! *hugs Eagle* :D

...Oh yeah, there's one thing I really don't get with old American muscle cars: Why do they all have such low power : displacement ratios? I remember talking to Porkchop about his car, which had a 3.8 litre engine, but only generated about 135hp. That only translates to about 35.5hp per litre.

My Aygo has a 1.0 litre engine (only 3 cylinders lol), but it still gets 67hp. If even the cheapest possible (well, almost) car I can buy over here can get nearly twice the power : displacement ratio of what was apparently a much more expensive car when new... what gives? It's not like this Aygo was designed to be powerful or anything either; it was specifically designed to be as cheap as possible.
Maybe Porkchop just had a shitty car; I dunno. XD

In any case, I like superlight sports cars better than muscle cars. I'm SO getting one of these bastards (if and) when I have the money!

Image

And considering it only costs about £30,000 now (about a tenth of the kind of cars it can beat the shit out of in a race), I'd say it's money well spent, boy's toy or not. Replace the passenger seat with a storage box for a boot, and you've got yourself the perfect car...

Re: What I got to do today.

Well, while my current car is about as interesting as a soggy egg roll, my first few cars (thanks, Dad!) were some real winners - well, all but one, but you'll see. These pics are not my actual car, but they are correct for color, body type and accessories.

My first love: 1967 GTO :D
Image

Small block V8; air compressor-controlled rear shocks; dual carbs. Did 0..60 in about 4.5 secs. Could lift the front tires off the ground about 6 inches when I punched it. Max speed: 134 MPH. Ironically, this car was destroyed by an unlicensed 17 year old girl who ran a red light and T-boned me just as was going through an intersection. I was only going 25 mph at the time. I was unhurt, but the car was trashed. She was driving an old Lincoln Continental - it was like getting hit by a tank.

Car #2: 1972 Pontiac Lemans Sport :o
Image

She sat low to the ground, and had a big-block V8, also dual carbs. Not as fast as the Goat - 0-60 in about 5.3, but she had a faster top end. Maxxed her out at about 145 MPH - speedometer only went to 140. I blew the engine on this one during an impromptu highway race with a Camaro. I would have won, but I blew a rocker arm and rod right through the valve cover and into the hood. My Dad was really pissed about that.

Car #3: 1972 Gremlin.
Image

Between lack of cash and wanting to slow me down, Dad bought me a purple AMC Gremlin with a black stripe. It was a 4-speed on the floor, straight-6, single carb. No where nearly as cool as the first two cars, and certainly not as fast. I got her to go to about 100MPH once, and everything was vibrating and shaking like an earthquake in San Francisco. I had to keep her under 80 for fear of self-destruction by vibration. Oddly enough, because it was more "feminine" than my first two cars, my friends liked it for me, and thought it was cute. Fortunately, after about 10 months of my abuse, I blew a head gasket and fried the engine. I hate cute!

Car #4: 1973 Chevy Malibu
Image

On the outside, it looked like a stock Chevy. Nothing fancy, very dependable. But it was a "sleeper" car. The engine was a bored out 305cc V8 (to 350+), dual carbs, aftermarket turbo and 5-speed Hurst auto-manual shifter. Modified suspension and Porsche shocks gave it a stiff ride that made it take corners like a much smaller car. Did 0-60 in 4.6; maxxed it at 151 MPH (Speedo went to 160, and I had her pegged) Wouldn't lift the front tires off the ground - but she was fast off the line. Nice thing was when I slowed down and drove "normal", no one would even give me a second look. Another twist of fate - on the way to work (after a long day at college) another 18 year old girl blew a stop sign, but it wasn't a T-bone - the side street was at an angle behind me and to my right. She hit my right-rear quarter panel while I was doing about 45, and spun me around. I wound up sideways over a large curb (which tore up all 4 tires and rims), skidded across a lawn, and smacked into a cement porch, nose first. Via con Dios!

Car #5: 1978 Chrysler Cordoba (dark green) :?
Image

This was a nice combination of speed and luxury. It wallowed off the line - 0-60 in 7+ seconds, but could reach a cruising speed of 110 without so much as a vibration. Maxxed her out at about 145; her V8 block drank gas like I was an Arab - got about 8 MPG. First car I ever owned that had power windows and seats. It was also the first year Chrysler started to screw around with computer-assisted ignition systems. Good thing I had a friend at a Chrysler saleroom - I had to replace that computer module 3 times in two years, and had it fixed for free as "under recall and warranty". But even after that, it wound up having 2 speeds: fast and "won't start". It then decided that it would just randomly quit as I was zipping along the highway. Imagine my surprise at 70 MPH when the entire car cuts off dead, and the power steering and power brakes fail. It's like trying to dead-stick a 747 on a grass runway. Wound up selling it for half of what I bought it for just to get it out of my face.

There were others, but they weren't as interesting as these 5. I wish I still had that GTO - it's a collector's edition now. How sad! :(

Damn straight. I only wish my car was a stick-shift. The '99 SLK's did have the stickshift option, but doing a manual conversion would cost just way too much. But hey...it's still my first car, and it was used, so I had to pick what I could get.

It's just a matter of technology over time. The electrical systems in these cars, for example, are far more advanced today then they were years ago. Instead of a distributor cap which has an arm that spins around inside giving charge to the different spark plugs, you have computer-controlled ignition systems which are more precise and efficient. Also, you have fuel-injection today instead of carburetors, which is far, far better in terms of hp-per-cid.

It goes the same with why cars are just as fast today with far less horsepower...lower curb weights and better suspensions allow for greater power-to-weight ratios, which warrant less speed. Additionally, better transmissions with more gears allow you to take better advantage of your car's optimal power band. So, my car, with only 200hp, has the same 0-60 speeds as an AMC Javelin with its top engine and over 400hp.

God, I remember that car! I saw this Top Gear video a loooong time ago (before YouTube was even around), and I still clearly remember the fun face he made when he zoomed around. I'll admit I cringed when they first described they plopped a Honda Civic engine in it, put with forced induction and all their tweaks, the 300+hp in that lightweight body is nothing to underestimate. Great stuff!

Actually, I wonder if that car is still available...this video was from around 6-7 years ago, so I don't know if the Atom is still being manufactured. I haven't heard much since Top Gun's segment.

Wow, nice cars Byte. Though I wouldn't have chosen that color on a GTO that's for damn sure. I tell ya, there sure are some ass-ugly colors for cars today. It's really sad you got the GTO t-boned though. :( *plays "Taps"* that's the problem with teen drivers, the mortality rate is just way too damn high. Teens are the worst drivers on the road, they all think they're invincible. They're not!

Thanks, Cobra. The brown GTO wasn't that bad - at the time all I had was $650 to buy a car, and that one fit my budget - and made Dad happy.

The best part about driving all this American Muscle was pulling up to a red light, and having the guy in the other car look at mine, then at me, and do a double take. They'd rev their engine and try to take off fast - and depending on location, traffic, schools, kids, etc sometimes I'd teach them a lesson about chivalry.

One important thing to note about my driving: On the open road and clear highway, I'll get a severe case of 'lead-foot-itis'. But in residential areas, especially in school zones or where kids are, I drive BELOW the speed limit and keep my eyes peeled for those stupid little buggers that were never taught not to run into traffic. Kids don't watch out for themselves, and I will NEVER put myself in a position where I have to look a grieving mother in her eyes and say, "I'm sorry, I didn't have time to stop." I've had to slam on the brakes a few times to prevent a kid from getting run down when they just didn't see - or hear - me rumbling down the street.

The more you know....

You forgot the image:

But yeah, I can relate to that. When I first got my little speed demon of a car, I had to really work to stay within the speed limit. I think the worst speeding I ever did was going 135 on Route 3 right near Giants Stadium on a busy Saturday. I'm surprised I'm alive, actually. Between other cars, cops, and many other things that could have gone wrong, it's a wonder something didn't. When you get older, you start to think about the ramifications of your actions, so all of a sudden driving 140 loses a bit of its appeal.

Well, that's not true. It'll never lose its appeal. I just won't do it. :D

Ack! Why would anyone put an automatic box on something like that!? The whole point of stuff like the SLK is to enjoy driving it. It just destroys the idea to have the car do half the driving for you IMO.

Heheh. Low weight cars are always hard to beat with conventional high-powered cars, simply because weight becomes exponentially harder to drag around at higher speeds. It doesn't seem to matter how much power you give a car; if it might as well have been made out of lead and granite it's not going to go as fast as you'd expect.

EagleRock wrote:Actually, I wonder if that car is still available...this video was from around 6-7 years ago, so I don't know if the Atom is still being manufactured. I haven't heard much since Top Gun's segment.

Oh, they are, but that's not the best bit...

There's a new one coming out. And if the official figures are to be believed, it makes the current one look like a kid's toy.

Re: What I got to do today.

I've got nothing against the low-weight cars - and I can't argue that the composite body and reduced mass can let an engine generate far more effective horse power and speed. That's just physics. And yes, they do look really cool, too. :D

But call me crazy (um...again) - When that fancy and expensive ultralight is zipping along the track at a blazing 180 mph, and manages to hit a small bump in the road that brings the nose up just high enough to create some lift and flip (think: speed boats), what size sponge will they use to mop up the driver after it tumbles and rolls for a mile, shedding composite carbon and lightweight alloys like a rolling jigsaw puzzle?

Yeah, I know heavier cars are not as efficient - but if you're going to try flying at ground level, you'd better be ready to take a hit if something goes wrong. Just my opinion, though... ;)

A guy calling a car sexy is like a woman saying "that dildo is the best lover I ever had". It's all in your mind. Just because something has curves everywhere, purrs like a kitten at rest and growls like a tiger when you beat on it doesn't mean you are pleasing it - it just makes those noises to keep you content while you make much more out of it than it really is.

Cars aren't sexy - but drivers can be. I've never known a woman who thought a car was sexy - but I've heard countless men (of all ages) use that same phrase over and over and over. I guess if you can't get it IRL, you'll just have to make it up as you go along.
