To RogerBK: I wasn't aware that English wasn't your first language. If you can find an online typing test in your native language, feel free to use that instead and post the results.

NO?? I thought you knew this!!

ALso, I don't think there is a Portuguese typing test...

Also, I'm extremely fast typing in Portuguese and in English only when I have something in my head... I type reviews in 4 minutes... :) :)

Funny you should mention that...that typing test site has Portuguese listed as one of the languages...all you have to do is click the little flag on the top of the page. Here's a handy-dandy linky for you: http://www.typingtest.com/pt/

Actually, that's the best part about any apt-based distro:

# aptitude update
# aptitude install <packagename>

Done. No downloading or nothing. Of course, Ubuntu has its own issues, but I always found applications easy on Linux. Actually, it's 50 times easier than dealing with Windows, IMO.

If you need some Linux tips, feel free to ask. I've been doing it for 10 years now, and I don't even bother with Windows machines at home anymore.

Re: The Barracks Typing Competition!

thanx... that's good to know...

I know linux is way better... but some of the programs i need are most on Windows, and there is not a decent version for Linux... this computer has windows and ubuntu (becuase a virus killed the computer... and i was able to revive it this way)...

anyway... the only problem i have right now, is that
the Spanish version of the typingtest.com... don't work, because it say i don't have Java...
i already added java, and it appear as correct in the ubuntu software center... so i am not sure what to do now...

(sorry to get out of topic XD)

Looks like your Java install only has the Linux/Ubuntu version - you need to download the Java interpreter for Windows separately. Start a Windows session, use Firefox, and go to www.java.com - and download the latest version for the Windows executable. That will need to be installed in the Windows environment.

Then, just to be safe, go into the Ubuntu side and download / re-install the latest Java version of linux/Ubuntu as well. This way you can be sure that both environments have the latest Java versions, and hopefully, it will be recognized under either environment.

Let me know if that works for you, ok? :D

You might need to reinstall the Java application. I don't know much about the Ubuntu Software Center, other than the fact it's a nice cozy front-end to the apt system. See if there is a reinstallation option for java. If not, you might need to reinstall it through the command-line.

Open up a console window and type the following:

  Code:
$ sudo aptitude search sun-java6

It'll come up with something like this:

  Code:
eaglerock@scotch:~/Desktop$ sudo aptitude search sun-java
[sudo] password for eaglerock:
p   sun-java6-bin                   - Sun Java(TM) Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 (
p   sun-java6-demo                  - Sun Java(TM) Development Kit (JDK) 6 demos
p   sun-java6-fonts                 - Lucida TrueType fonts (from the Sun JRE)
p   sun-java6-javadb                - Java(TM) DB, Sun Microsystems' distributio
p   sun-java6-jdk                   - Sun Java(TM) Development Kit (JDK) 6
i   sun-java6-jre                   - Sun Java(TM) Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 (
p   sun-java6-plugin                - The Java(TM) Plug-in, Java SE 6
p   sun-java6-source                - Sun Java(TM) Development Kit (JDK) 6 sourc
eaglerock@scotch:~/Desktop$

Check to see if the JRE is installed, as noted by the "i" on the left side of the listing. If it is, go ahead and reinstall as follows:

  Code:
$ sudo aptitude reinstall sun-java6-jre

See what happens after that. You will probably need to restart your web browser after you do this. Hope this helps!

But srsly...back on topic. Let's see if anyone can beat Byte's huge-ass score...I'll give it a shot, but I think I'm too tired to make three-digit speeds. It's worth a shot, though...

Re: The Barracks Typing Competition!

Damn...fizzled again. I had a really good run going at over 110wpm with only 1 error, but I froze up at the end and my speed quickly dropped under 90wpm. Ugh...so frustrating.

I'll beat you yet!

Re: The Barracks Typing Competition!

Call it "Peer Pressure" but I finally caved and took the damn test. The last time I took it, my result was 32wpm with 6 errors which brought it down to 26wpm. I just took it again, and here is my result.
