RogerBK wrote:Now, I have only one question (OMG, I love to ask things. 8-) ) I was thinking, is a Intel i7 of 2.66 Ghz better than a Dual Core of 3.0 Ghz?? I know it can be a really dumb question, but I was confused, since the i7 is the newest processor in the market, it should be better than an older one like the Dual Core. Does the Ghz of the processor is the thing that really matters when you compare 2 processors??

Thanks again Bytes! :) :)

Never worry about asking questions, especially if they are intelligent ones like you asked. Also, here's a little quote I made up regarding this: "It's better to ask a question and sound stupid than it is to not ask and be stupid."

Anyway, here's the deal with the Core i7. It is actually a quad-core processor (four processors on the die), so even though it has a slower clock speed than the dual-core processor, it has quite a bit more processing power. Also, when comparing processors from different generations, you also have to consider different things, such as how efficient the processor is per clock cycle (in other words, it does more processing per hertz), or if it has more L2 and L3 cache, which is the processor's on-board memory.

Rather than spending all that time trying to figure out which is better, though, just use a benchmarking site if you are not sure which processor is better. Passmark has some good tools which show the relative performance of processors using their benchmarking software. Here's the link for their high-end CPU chart: LINK

Take a look at the Core i7 860 (which the processor I own), which is a quad-core i7 running at 2.80GHz. Compare it to the Core i7 930, which is also a quad-core i7 running at the same 2.80 GHz. The 930, however, is much faster. Why? Well, the big difference between these two is that the 930 processor runs on the 1366 chipset, while the 860 runs on the 1156 chipset. The 1156 chipset is Intel's standard-line chipset, while the 1366 chipset is their "Enthusiast" chipset.

It can be very easy to lose track of what the hell is going on in the CPU world, especially if you are not in the field, so benchmarks are your friend. So are those of us that will answer your questions. :-)

Re: Eagle's latest toys

Sorry for posting in this old thread, but I have a doubt here...

I was searching through some sites here, and I found a gamer desktop, can you guys tell me if the price and the desktop is good value, or I should search for another computer?

Specs:
CPU Intel Sandy Bridge Core I7 2600 3.40GHz Quad Box (I entered that benchmark site, and I found out this is an awesome CPU!)
Mother Board Gigabyte Core i3, I5, I7 (Sandy-Bridge) | GA-H67MA-UD2H-B3
8GB DDR3 1333MHz RAM Kingston
Hard Disk Western Digital HDD 1TB SATA3 7200RPM
Nvidia Geforce GTX 550 TI 1GB GDDR5 192-bit (this one disappointed me... I can put a better one in the PC, but it'll cost higher)
Source feeding 500w
Aerocool BX-500
Cost: 1500 Dollars (I converted it. :D)

Hmm, is it a good desktop to run games like Black Ops, Crysis 2, Battlefield BC, and all the other new stuff??

Re: Eagle's latest toys

Well for 1500 that's actually a pretty good deal. Here's the specs of my laptop:

320 GB HDD
two T9300 Intel Core processors both at 2.50 GHz
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650 video card
4 GB RAM
DELL 1510 wireless internet card.

Cost about $2100. Those are just the base specs.

Hmm, pretty good one Cobra! :D

Also, I think with the Windows 7 Home Premium and with the headphones, the total is 1600 Dollars. Nothing too high, but it's not very cheap too.

Re: Eagle's latest toys

:D Well, I've been playing Portal 2 on my gamer rig:

- Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R motherboard
- Windows 7 Professional, 64 Bit
- 1000W Coolmax Power Supply Unit 80PLUS
- Built in Dolby surround sound 7.1
- 12 GB of DDR3 RAM at 2000 mHz
- 2 sets of mirrored 2 TB SATA drives, 15000 RPM (total 4TB disk)
- Radeon HD5870 Video Card, Dual 24" monitors, 1GB RAM onboard, 2GB Shared
- Intel Core i7-875K CPU (8 core, overclocked to 3.0Ghz)
- Blu-Ray / DVD / CD (all R/W) drive
- Intel 1GB Pro LAN card (Dual Port)
- Air cooled from fans ripped from an Apple MAC G5 case (3-speed settings)
- Support for USB 3.0, External SATA 3Ghz

When all the fans kick in to high gear, it sounds like a jet - but you can't hear it over the 4 speakers and sub-woofer pounding the air. Good thing the neighbors are far enough away not to complain. I use headphones at night just to be considerate.

I built it over a period of about 5 months - spent about $2,400 on it (just for parts).

Yet, oddly enough, for all this power, I'm using a plain-vanilla clone case - nothing fancy. A sleeper machine - looks like crap on the outside, but has raw power and peak performance on the inside. Oh, and just for lulz - that stupid Windows 7 experience index rated it a 7.9 on ALL components.

AND....

I've built a "Little Sister" to this one - same Mobo, but only 8GB RAM, 1TB disk, and only DVD/CD drive. Other specs about the same. That one is my "work" PC - good for programming development when I don't need to waste a billion computer cycles a second while debating what background color code I should use for a website.

Remember, folks - I AM a professional. Don't try this at home without the proper supervision.

Woah!

Where did you learn to build computers?? It shouldn't be an easy task... Saw the pics Eagle posted in this thread I think where he's mounting everything inside the PC. It should be really awesome to have a homemade kickass computer!!

BTW, bytes' computer blowed that one I described up there...

Rog, let me clue you in on a little secret, anything you or I or anyone else in the EGB, ouuildr computers wiL NEVER match up to Eagle's rig or Byte's. EVER! Anytime we start talking about computers, those two have the top of the line hardware. We will never match up to their prowess.

Re: Eagle's latest toys

At least they could send us some parts of old computers they have. Or share their computer awesomeness...

Anyways, another doubt. What is SSD? I heard it's kind of a HD, but a faster one... Didn't understand it very well... :(

Also, what's the brand of your monitors? It has to be 1080p to play those new games at HD settings, right??

What parts do you need? I have different parts for various PCs + clones; most of these I get when a client upgrades an older PC to a newer one, and they no longer want or need the older PC. I'll give them a credit toward the bill (usually $50 - $100) and then I can either rebuild it or strip it for parts.

As for my rig - it's my only vice. I don't smoke or drink or do drugs or gamble or piss away money on clothes. With all the hours I work and all the bills I pay, I have to enjoy a little bit of life. And since my "job" is also my "hobby" and I truly am a geekette, I just enjoy doing hardware and software and all things technical.

SSD = Solid State Drive. Take a standard USB memory stick (which is nothing more than an EEPROM chip on a small circuit board) - from there, link together a few chips to get 64GB or 128GB or whatever size memory you want in the drive. Now, replace the USB connector with a SATA connector, and add another circuit board to act as an interface to the PC. The PC thinks it's a hard drive, but internally, it's really a bunch of chips you find in USB sticks. It's WAY FASTER than a hard drive - most hard drives have response times in milliseconds. But SSDs can be literally 100 times faster - no moving parts. I'll tell you this: within 10 years, SSD units will be standard, and have both internal and external connections - and make CDs and DVDs a thing of the past.

I run Samsung monitors. They take analog, digital, HDMI and cable input, and are a great deal for the money. In fact, I'm seriously looking into buying a 42" Samsung HD unit - they're selling here in CT for about $500. Just have to move a few things around so I can use it for both my gamer rig and also watch it in my living room. (My gamer rig is in my office (spare bedroom)).

Hah, was only kidding... Thanks for the kindness anyway...

MUST be awesome to work with computers... And even more awesome to know all this technical stuff

Fucking hell!! I can't immagine myself playing videogames with the living room's TV!!

Anyway, I think a good team would be: Intel i7 2600 and GeForce GTX 570... What do ya guys think?

Now that's just unnecessary. :P

Also, time for some stupid-ass questions:
I'm really liking this SSD thing. Apparently, the hard disk on my computer is the worst bit of the lot (The "stupid" Windows exp. rating thing gives it a 5.9; everything else is a 6.5 or better), so obviously it looks like a good idea to me. How easy is it to actually install these things, though? Am I only going to end up breaking a ~$1000 computer in the process?

Also, this thing has an AMD Phenom twin-core in it. I've heard that some of these Phenom twin-core processors are actually quad cores with 2 of the cores disabled, and the method of re-activating said cores is neither difficult nor costly (possibly even free) to do. How would I find out if my particular computer has these extra cores (googling it only came up with shady-looking crapsites offering downloads that had 'virus' written all over them), and if it does (and the rumours about activating them are true), how could I activate them?

(P.S: Yes, this is a different computer to the one I posted about either earlier in this thread or somewhere else in these forums. That one LITERALLY exploded. Complete with small electrical fire and smoke billowing out the back. Shit was fun, yo. :? )

Re: Eagle's latest toys

I was thinking on putting this SSD thing in the PC's budget, but, it turned out the PC would cost 3000 Dollars, what's really shit, since my dad would never buy me a 3000 dollar pc. He thinks it's unnecessary.

BTW, he used to play Atari in his childhood, he thinks I don't need a powerful PC to play games. lol (he's 36 yo)

Well, if I remember rightly, what happened was something like this:

It went bang. Go figure.

:P

(Seriously though: the power supply blew up. I opened it and there was a hilarious little crater-mark around where one of the components was supposed to be. XD)
